PDA at Pride

apparentlyeverything:

There’s a lot of discussion right now about whether “PDA” is appropriate at Pride events, so here’s a reminder that the very first Pride event in 1970 (called the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade) featured a “Gay-In” with same-sex couples showing public affection for each other:

Similar events were held at other Prides in the 70s and 80s. In this period, displays of same-sex affection were especially encouraged, and some even featured gay “kissing booths”:

This was not casual, it was an intentional choice meant to send a specific political message that LGBT people would no longer stay hidden. People who say that PDA grosses them out no matter who does it are missing the point entirely. Public displays of affection among LGBT people within the context of Pride are part of its historical political message and significance. Refusing to  engage with and understand that context is inherently reactionary.

every time I watch the bachelor I think about how much better it would be if it was with lesbians…..but then I think of how it wouldn’t work because all the women would fall in love with each other and not the bachelorette….and THEN I remember the most obvious flaw in this system, the bachelorette could literally have 30 women professing their love for her and knowing us lesbians she would still be like “I just don’t know if they actually like me”

after careful consideration I’ve decided that this in fact would be amazing reality tv and I am currently waiting on a rich lesbian investor

it looks like we have found our lesbian investor

a lot of reviews i’ve seen of rafiki have given it a 3/5 and critics are calling it a sweet, simple, almost bubblegum-ish movie…. but like that’s the whole point of it? it’s meant to be a drama at its core, but bursting with joy, music and love.

we often take advantage in the west of the fact that we can portray the sexual, political and complicated aspects of lgbt life without it being censored, but in a country with militant homophobia and anti-gay laws, a portrayal of a lesbian romance in the modern day between two teenagers as sweet, and innocent is an incredibly brave stance to take.

rafiki is not as complex or heartbreaking or visceral as brokeback mountain, but it’s a powerful statement in and of itself to make a movie about lesbians that’s actually happy in tone for once. it’s something that larger studios here are still too scared to make lmao

you’re right and you should say it
